APOEL from Nicosia will welcome Ajax to Cyprus on Tuesday for the teams 1st leg game of their Champions League Play-Off. APOEL went past through Sutjeska and Qarabag to reach the play-off stage, while Ajax saw off the competition from Greek side PAOK in the previous round.
Worth mentioning: The two sides have met just twice this century and the Dutch champions from Ajax are still undefeated. The games were from the group stage of the Champions League and the first, which was played in Cyprus ended in a 1:1 draw. The second in Amsterdam though, saw Ajax run riot and scored four unanswered goals in APOEL’s net. In total one game featured over 2,5 goals and the other witnessed goals at both ends.
Worth mentioning: No draw has been registered in APOEL’s last twelve matches across all competitions, as the Cyprus champions recorded seven victories in the process. Just two of the team’s last five outings produced over 2,5 goals, while a solitary game saw both involved sides finding the back of the nets. APOEL have not been very impressive in the latest encounters at home, as they won just two out of the last six and recorded losses in each of the others. They managed to score more than a goal just once during that period.
Ajax are unbeaten in their last seven outings and are currently on a three game winning streak. Each of the Dutch champions last five encounters featured over 2,5 goals, as four also witnessed goals at both ends. Ajax are undefeated in eleven consecutive matches away from home across all competitions.
Additionally, Ajax are a much more competitive side and are without a doubt a class apart from their foes. Considering that APOEL Nicosia have never got the better of their counterparts here either, it looks more than likely that the Dutch outfit will be walking away with the bragging rights in this one.
